Every photograph on this site comes from Wikimedia Commons or, for the few places Commons lacks, from Flickr, always under a free licence. Here is who took it, under which licence, and where the original lives.

How they are chosen

Photographs under free licences, chosen place by place.

The images come from the Wikimedia Commons category for each place; when Commons has no suitable photograph, from Flickr. They are in the public domain or under CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA.

Each photograph is chosen for the place it shows. Where no suitable one exists, the page shows a drawn plate, declared as an illustration in its alternative text.

The footage

The two homepage films, one for wide screens and one upright for phones, are cut from a single freely licensed drone reel.
