The lake live from twenty-seven points, chosen for what they frame: the two branches and the upper lake, the squares on the water and the peaks around.

How to read the lake from a webcam

  1. The light comes from the east. In the morning the western shores — Tremezzina, Menaggio, Moltrasio — are in the sun while Varenna is still in the Grigna's shadow; at sunset it is the other way round, and the Grigna turns red last.

  2. The Breva, the afternoon wind from the south, shows as ripples running up from Como and Lecco towards Bellagio; the dawn Tivano as flat water under the shore and a ruffled surface further out.

  3. When the centre of the lake is overcast, the Colico and Lecco rowing-club webcams often show a different sky, and the Sormano observatory's shows whether there is sun above the clouds.
