The measured wind

The wind recorded by the weather stations at Como, Lecco and Colico: the latest reading from each, with its time, the last 48 hours and, for each hour of the day, the mean wind of the last thirty days.

The last 48 hours

Each station measures the speed and direction of the wind every ten minutes. Readings arrive in batches several times a day, so the latest may be a few hours old. The charts of the last 48 hours all share the same scale.

  • Solid line: the ten-minute mean speed.
  • Dashed line: the ten-minute peak.
  • The arrows, every three hours, point the way the wind blows; a ring means calm or a variable direction.

The wind hour by hour

Each bar gathers the readings taken at one hour of the day over the last thirty days, one a day: each is the mean of the ten minutes ending on the hour. The height of the bar is their mean speed. The arrow shows the most frequent of eight directions (north, north-east, east and so on), pointing the way the wind blows.

  • Solid bar: the wind came most often from the north, north-east or north-west.
  • Hatched bar: from the south, south-east or south-west.
  • Empty bar: from the east or the west.
  • Period of the readings: 2 October – 1 November.

How to read the readings

What is measured

The speed is the mean of the ten minutes ending at the time shown; the peak is the highest speed recorded in the same ten minutes. The direction is the one the wind comes from, in degrees clockwise from north; the arrows draw it the way the wind blows. A knot, the unit used on boats, is 1.852 km/h.

The stations

The three stations belong to ARPA Lombardia's weather network. Como's is at Villa Gallia, on Via Borgo Vico, about a hundred metres from the shore and 201 metres above sea level. Lecco's is on Via Sora, a little over a kilometre from the lake, at 272 metres. Colico's is on Via La Madoneta, about a kilometre from the shore, at 229 metres.

The two winds

The Tivano comes down from the north before and around dawn; the Breva blows up from the south from midday to sunset, stronger towards the upper lake. They are the lake's two regular winds. The hour-by-hour charts show, station by station, at which hours of the last thirty days the wind came most often from the north and at which from the south.
