North of Menaggio the lake widens. It has lakeside campsites, wide beaches and sailing schools, and is the right base for anyone coming to be in the water rather than to tour villas.

The centre of the lake is a long way off, though: a good forty-five minutes whichever way you go.

What you gain

  • The Breva almost every afternoon from May to September
  • Wide, accessible beaches
  • Colico has the station, and from there the whole eastern branch is reachable

What you give up

  • The villas and gardens are a good hour away: you do not come here for those
  • Domaso has no station: without a car you arrive by bus or by boat

Domaso

Domaso is a village on the western shore of the upper lake, with a historic centre of cobbled lanes and a long beach. Sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing take place along the shore. The Breva blows up the lake from the south and is regular in anticyclonic conditions. The slopes of Sasso Pelo rise behind the village.
