Basing yourself on the Lecco branch gets you a train frequency the other shore simply does not have, and puts the Grigne and the Sentiero del Viandante within reach.

In exchange, the villas are far: the garden circuit needs half a day and a ferry.

What you gain

  • Frequent trains from Milano Centrale, Porta Garibaldi and Bergamo
  • Alpine-grade hiking half an hour from the water
  • The beaches at Lierna and Abbadia

What you give up

  • The great historic villas are almost all on the other shore
  • Boats on the Lecco branch are few and seasonal: you go by train

Lecco

Lecco stands at the southern end of Lake Como's eastern branch, where the Adda flows out. Its industrial history is tied to iron and steel, with mountains rising directly above the houses. Alessandro Manzoni set the opening chapters of The Betrothed here. The town is home to the Ragni di Lecco mountaineering group.
