Como provides an urban base for visiting the lake: Como San Giovanni and Como Nord Lago stations link the centre to Milan, while the funicular climbs to Brunate.

Museums, churches and the theatre offer options for rainy days. Allow time for the boat or bus journey to the centre of the lake.

What you gain

  • Forty minutes by train from Milano Centrale, plus Malpensa connections
  • Indoor museums, for winter and rainy days
  • The cathedral, Rationalist buildings and Teatro Sociale

What you give up

  • Reaching Bellagio and Varenna requires a boat or bus journey
  • In the city, access to the water is concentrated at the lidos; the central lakefront is an urban promenade
  • City traffic affects bus journeys

Como

Como is a walled city of Roman origin, where silk has been woven and printed since the late eighteenth century. Its historic centre preserves the grid plan of the Roman town. From Milan the train takes about forty minutes, and boats for the rest of the lake leave from the piers in front of the town.
