The Grand Hotel Tremezzo opened in 1910 on the shore at Tremezzo.
It was built by Enea Gandola, who lived in Bellagio with his wife Maria: in 1907 he had bought the grounds of Villa Poncetta to open a grand hotel in a village where tourism was growing, and work began in 1908. The Art Nouveau building is a long block of several storeys with stucco work and balconies, facing the lake on one side and the garden on the other. From the start it had lifts and electric signs. About sixty years after it opened the hotel passed to the De Santis family, who still own it. Around it lies a park of more than two hectares, with palms, old olive trees, azaleas, hydrangeas, magnolias and pines.
