The Salita Serbelloni

The Salita Serbelloni is one of the stepped streets that climb from the shore in the centre of Bellagio. The albumen print comes from an album of 1898 and carries the printed caption “Via Serbelloni a Bellagio Salita” and the name of its publisher, Bosetti of Bellagio; the photograph dates from 2020.

What the two pictures show

The street still climbs in cobbled steps, between tall houses with shops on the ground floor. In the album the shops have canvas awnings and goods laid out on the steps, where a few people have stopped; in the photograph there are hanging signs, shutters, a sun awning and potted plants.
