Lierna is a beach base: Riva Bianca is the crescent of pale pebbles below the hamlet of Castello, and the station on the Milan–Lecco–Sondrio–Tirano line is ten minutes' walk away.

You sleep in an apartment or a bed and breakfast, swim from the morning, and by train are in Varenna in ten minutes and Lecco in twenty-five. There are few restaurants.

What you gain

  • Riva Bianca, the pale-pebble beach below Castello, on foot from your room
  • A station on the Milan–Lecco–Sondrio–Tirano line: Varenna in ten minutes, Lecco in twenty
  • A stage of the Viandante passing through the village

What you give up

  • Not every train stops at Lierna: check that yours does
  • Restaurants you can count on one hand; for dinner out you go to Varenna or Mandello
  • The boat rarely calls: for the other shore you go via Varenna

Lierna

Lierna is a village on the eastern shore of the Lecco branch, between Mandello and Varenna. Below the Castello hamlet lies Riva Bianca, a crescent of pale pebbles, and the village has a station on the Milan–Lecco–Sondrio–Tirano line: you can get there without a car.
