Why go

Brenzio is one of the hamlets of Gravedona ed Uniti, on the mountain between Consiglio di Rumo and Stazzona, made of old houses crossed by narrow lanes, with doorways and wash houses.

The church of San Giovanni Battista already existed in 1411, was consecrated in 1490 and finished in the seventeenth century; the massive bell tower on its left side is seventeenth-century. Inside, the chancel, the wooden altar and the triumphal arch, of 1640, are by Isidoro Bianchi of Campione and his workshop. The two side chapels, dated 1628, are by Giovanni Mauro Della Rovere, known as the Fiammenghino; the frescoes of the small apse are by Antonio Maria Caraccioli of Vercana. Some of the wall paintings are attributed to Luigi Tagliaferri of Pagnona and to Giulio Quaglio. The seventeenth-century organ is by Carlo Prati.

Getting there

  • From Gravedona, drive up Via Don Pietro Pedroli towards Consiglio di Rumo and then Via Prestino to Taiana; at the first junction follow the signs for Brenzio, and after about 550 metres the church is on the left. The road is narrow in places.
