Colico
The Great War fortress at Colico, built between 1912 and 1914, its guns still in place.
Forte Montecchio Nord, at Colico, was built in a few months between 1912 and 1914, on the eve of the First World War.
It was part of the Frontiera Nord, the defences against a possible attack through Switzerland, and stands where five of the routes coming down from the Alps towards Milan converge. It is dug into the rock, with buildings of concrete and stone: the barracks, a 120-metre armoured tunnel, the powder magazine and the armoured battery. It never fired a shot in the Great War and so has survived intact: the four 149 mm Schneider guns are still there, in pits protected by steel cupolas that turn through 360 degrees, with a range of over 13 kilometres, along with the small ammunition stores. It is visited with a guide.
