Why go

Monte Barro, 922 metres high, rises immediately behind Malgrate and Galbiate.

It lies within the regional park established in 1983, whose woods, grasslands and cliffs support over a thousand plant species.

From the ridge the Lecco branch, Lake Garlate and Lake Annone are all visible together. Below the Eremo, an old Franciscan convent that later became a hotel and is now the park's centre, lie the Piani di Barra: here excavations carried out between 1986 and 1997 uncovered the remains of a Gothic-period settlement of the fifth and sixth centuries, with a dozen buildings. At the Eremo, the Barro archaeological museum holds over 400 finds from the digs, among them a hanging crown. It takes a couple of hours from the valley, less from the Eremo.

  • Three lakes in one view from the ridge
  • A regional park twenty minutes from Lecco
  • A short climb with no technical difficulty

Highlights

  • The summit ridge
  • The Eremo, from which the climb is shorter

Getting there

  • On foot from Malgrate or Galbiate; by car you can drive to the Eremo and walk less.

Accessibility

  • The Monte Barro park has started a programme to open it to people with motor and sensory disabilities, with new lifts and a path that makes it easier to reach the Piani di Barra archaeological area.
  • The improved-access trail at the Piani di Barra is about five hundred metres long, with a compacted surface, a gradient under 8 per cent and a handrail. Along it there are four tactile panels with braille texts; at the start, in the picnic area, there is an accessible toilet.
