Why go

The Museo Archeologico del Barro, at Eremo above Galbiate, holds over four hundred finds from excavations at Piani di Barra and Monte Castelletto.

Established in 1999 by Parco Monte Barro, it occupies two rooms on two levels. Jewellery, coins, pottery, glass and everyday objects document life in the Gothic settlement of the fifth and sixth centuries AD. The collection includes the hanging crown of Monte Barro. Panels and reconstruction drawings explain the objects. A visit can be combined with the archaeological areas, where remains of houses, walls and towers survive.

Getting there

The museum is at the Eremo, Via Balassi 1, at the end of the road up from Galbiate (Via Monte Barro, then Via Balassi), with parking in front. On Sundays and public holidays from May to September the road is closed to traffic at the Fornace: from there it is about half an hour on foot, or take the shuttle bus from Galbiate.

Accessibility

The museum is on two floors, with a stairlift that takes wheelchairs down to the basement too, and it has accessible toilets.
The path to the Piani di Barra archaeological area has improved accessibility: it can be used by wheelchairs with a companion, by people with walking difficulties and by parents with pushchairs.
