Iron and water. The Gerenzone valley between memory and change
Industrial-archaeology photographs of the Gerenzone valley, in Lecco's Torre Viscontea.
Malgrate
The linear park on the water facing Lecco, open since 2013: stepped terraces running down from the road to the lake, fountains, and the view of the city with the bell tower of San Nicolò between the Resegone and the San Martino.
The Malgrate lakefront faces Lecco from the opposite shore.
As early as the fourteenth century, before the Azzone Visconti bridge, Malgrate had a harbour linking the two shores; in the 1920s a ferry of rowing boats still crossed, until the Kennedy bridge arrived in the 1950s. Today's lakefront comes from a project by the architect and landscape designer Stefano Santambrogio, begun in 2009. Without touching the house fronts, the shore was redesigned as a linear park, with stepped levels between road and water, a continuous footpath and fountains. Since 2013 it has been a large garden open to all, with seats among the greenery and the terraces. From here you see Lecco with the bell tower of San Nicolò, the “Matitone”, between the Resegone and the San Martino mirrored in the lake; behind rises Monte Barro.
