Iron and water. The Gerenzone valley between memory and change
Industrial-archaeology photographs of the Gerenzone valley, in Lecco's Torre Viscontea.
Lecco
The gilded statue of San Nicolò stands in the water off Piazza Stoppani in Lecco, near the mouth of the Gerenzone.
Giuseppe Mozzanica depicted the city's patron saint, protector of sailors and boatmen. Set up in 1955, it was a gift from the people of Lecco to Monsignor Giovanni Borsieri for his twenty-five years as provost and fifty-five as a priest. The legend of apples turning to gold is linked to the custom of giving children a Saint Nicholas apple on 6 December. During the Festa del Lago e della Montagna, lucia boats join the procession on the lake, which is blessed in front of the statue. The nearby basilica holds Saint Nicholas's relics and manna.
