Why go

Palazzo delle Paure is a civic museum in Lecco, on Piazza XX Settembre.

The neo-medieval building was reconstructed in 1916 on the site of the 1905 customs house.

It housed the Intendenza di Finanza, the tax office, hence its popular name, the “palace of fears”. The first floor holds temporary exhibitions; the second has modern and contemporary art, prints and photography. On the third is the Museo dell'Alpinismo Lecchese, refitted in 2024 by the Lecco section of the CAI. Objects, images and multimedia displays trace a century of climbers, from Riccardo Cassin to Carlo Mauri.

  • It explains why Lecco is a city of climbers, and who they were.
  • It is in the centre, five minutes from the station and the lakefront.

Highlights

  • The Museo dell'Alpinismo Lecchese

Getting there

  • On foot from Lecco station: five minutes to Piazza XX Settembre.

Accessibility

  • The palace is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility, thanks to two large lifts.
  • There is only a low threshold at the entrance, and one of the lifts also bypasses the nine steps up to the photo archive on the second floor. Adapted toilets are on the ground and third floors.
