Why go

The Torre Viscontea is the fourteenth-century tower of Lecco's former castle, on Piazza XX Settembre.

It is the part of the Visconti fortifications that survived intact after demolitions began in the late eighteenth century. The castle housed the Spanish garrison in the seventeenth century; the fortress was abolished in 1782 and sold to private owners. Ground-floor remains include the guard quarters and stone cannonballs. The first floor hosts temporary exhibitions organised by the museum system and the municipality's Culture Department.

  • The top section of the tower was built in the fifteenth century, above the fourteenth-century structure.
  • After 1816, following work by the Lecco architect Giuseppe Bovara, the tower was used as a prison.
