Iron and water. The Gerenzone valley between memory and change

Lecco
The square at the heart of Lecco, with Francesco Confalonieri's 1884 statue of Garibaldi in front of the Teatro della Società.
Piazza Garibaldi is where the main streets of the centre cross, a few steps from the lakefront and the station.
It takes its name from Giuseppe Garibaldi, whose statue was unveiled on 16 November 1884: the Milanese sculptor Francesco Confalonieri made it, and it was the second raised to Garibaldi in Italy after his death. First set in the middle of the square, it was later moved to stand in front of the entrance to the Teatro della Società, the neoclassical theatre designed by Giuseppe Bovara. Around it stand Mario Cereghini's Palazzo di Giustizia, the Banca Popolare di Lecco building and, close by, the Palazzo delle Paure. Through the year the square hosts markets, concerts in summer and a skating rink in winter.
