Francesco Confalonieri's bronze unveiled in 1891: Manzoni seated with the manuscript of The Betrothed on his knees, and on the base Lucia's abduction, the lazaretto scene and the wedding.
Piazza Manzoni in central Lecco holds the bronze monument to the writer, by Francesco Confalonieri, unveiled in 1891.
The statue, 2.80 metres tall, shows Manzoni seated with the manuscript of The Betrothed on his knees. The red Baveno granite base is four and a half metres high. Three high reliefs by the same sculptor show Lucia's abduction towards Pescarenico, the lazaretto scene towards Via Roma and the wedding towards Viale della Costituzione. The side facing the Resegone bears the arms of Italy and Lecco. Gaetano Negri spoke at the unveiling; Giosuè Carducci also attended and gave his Lecco speech at the Croce di Malta hotel. The monument remains in its original position, with the Resegone behind it.
