Why go

MuRAC is Como's Museum of Air-Raid Shelters, in the 1937 air-raid and gas shelter beneath the Red Cross headquarters.

It opened on 15 June 2014. Carlo Mantegazza designed the building on land donated by the municipality in 1935, after Sant'Anna Hospital moved to Camerlata in 1932. The shelter retains gas masks, respirators, stretchers and uniforms. Documents, photographs and reconstructions explore the local Red Cross, medical aid and air-raid protection during the two world wars.

  • A 1937 air-raid shelter kept as it was, beneath central Como.
  • A small-group visit with a guide, good on a rainy day too.

Highlights

  • Carlo Mantegazza's Red Cross building
  • The records of anti-aircraft defence in both wars
  • The story of the Ospedale Sant'Anna

Getting there

  • The entrance is at Via Italia Libera 11 in Como, through the main door of the Red Cross Committee, a few minutes on foot from the walls.
