Why go

Porta Torre was built in 1192 as part of Como's medieval walls.

It stands on the south side of the walled town, in Largo Miglio, facing Piazza Vittoria, and was the way in for anyone arriving from Milan.

Towards the outside it is more closed, with two archways; towards the town it has a single archway and opens in four tiers of double arches, best seen from inside the walls. The tower cannot be visited: you look at it from outside, and walk under it on your way into the centre.

  • It is the gate through which travellers from Milan came in, and you still walk under it.
  • From Piazza Vittoria you see it whole, with Garibaldi's statue in front and the Brunate hill behind.
