Why go

The palace was built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries on earlier medieval buildings.

Until 1591 it belonged to the Cemme family; then the architect Giovanni Antonio Piotti, known as il Vacallo, bought it and probably designed its rebuilding. In 1657 it passed to the Cernezzi, who gave it its name, in 1821 to Giovanni Brocca and in 1838 to Agostino Bruni. In 1853 the Comune bought it and made it the town hall. It still is, on Via Vittorio Emanuele II, a short walk from the Duomo.

  • Como's town hall since 1853, in a sixteenth- and seventeenth-century palace in the heart of the walled town.
  • A short walk from the Duomo and San Fedele.

Access

Only through the entrance on Via Bertinelli; there is no way in through the one on Via Vittorio Emanuele II, even when it is open

The left-hand pedestrian gate is reserved for people going to the registry or civil status offices. For every other office, go in through the right-hand gate, by the guard's booth: you say which office you are going to, leave an identity document and collect a numbered pass marked “VISITATORE”, to be kept on display for as long as you are in the town hall.
