Why go

The Broletto is Como's medieval civic palace beside the cathedral, with a façade banded in white, grey and red marble.

Home to the municipal institutions from the thirteenth century, it retains an inscription dated 1215 and has Gothic additions. On the main façade four pointed arches support the portico, with three triple windows above. The civic tower held the bell that called public assemblies. After the fire of 1408, Pietro da Breggia's restoration ended in 1436. Cathedral construction reduced the palace's southern part. Conversion into a theatre was completed in 1764; from 1813 it housed the notarial archive. Restoration in 1895 removed the eighteenth-century additions and reopened the windows; the tower was rebuilt in 1926–1927. The hall hosts exhibitions and meetings.
