Why go

San Giacomo is a Romanesque church beside Como Cathedral, behind the Broletto.

It was probably built in the late eleventh century.

The sixteenth-century front has niches beside the doorway and a three-part window in the centre. The interior, with a nave, two aisles and a transept, was extensively altered in the seventeenth century. Restoration in the early 1970s returned the tower enclosing the dome to its octagonal form and reopened its twin-light windows and eight tufa oculi.

  • A Romanesque church a few steps from the front of the Duomo.
  • The place where Como's first commune met, before the Broletto.

Highlights

  • The sixteenth-century front with its Serlian window
  • The octagonal crossing tower with its twin-light windows and oculi
  • The three Romanesque apses with their small arches
  • The capitals and the symbols of the Evangelists

Getting there

  • It stands on Piazza Grimoldi, beside the Duomo and behind the Broletto, in the middle of the walled town.
