Why go

The oratory of San Fedelino stands on the western bank of the Mera below Monte Berlinghera, with a Romanesque nave and frescoes in its apse.

It lies in Sorico's territory and is reached on foot or by boat. The building probably dates from the tenth century and is associated with the tradition of Saint Fidelis's martyrdom. Its almost square nave, about three and a half metres across, ends in a semicircular apse. Built against the rock, it has no main façade: entrances open on the north and south sides. The walls combine local stone with reused marble and granite; the apse has pilaster strips and pairs of small tufa arches. Inside, frescoes attributed to the eleventh century show Christ between two angels and the twelve apostles below. Used in the past as a small fort and storehouse, the oratory underwent several restorations in the twentieth century.

Getting there

  • No road reaches it: it is reached on foot or by boat on the river Mera. From Dascio it is about six kilometres on the old Via Regina, around Monte Peschiera. It can also be reached on foot from Casenda, in the comune of Samolaco, or by boat from Novate Mezzola.
