Why go

San Giovanni is a lakeside hamlet of Bellagio, half an hour's walk from the centre.

The church of San Giovanni Battista has a Baroque façade and a tower with five bells; its appearance dates from work in the second half of the eighteenth century. The nave and two aisles hold Gaudenzio Ferrari's Risen Christ among Saints and Donors, given by the Frizzoni family, an Immacolata in Carrara marble from Bernini's school, and seventeenth-century walnut choir stalls. In a nearby tower house, the Museum of Navigation Instruments displays Gianni Gini's private collection: over two hundred objects, including eighteenth-century Venetian telescopes, compasses, marine chronometers, a brass planetarium and nineteenth-century logbooks.

  • An altarpiece by Gaudenzio Ferrari in a church on the water, in the hamlet of San Giovanni.
  • A museum of instruments for navigation, a few steps from the pier.
