Why go

The marble statue of Alessandro Volta was unveiled in 1838, eleven years after Volta's death, and is the work of the neoclassical sculptor Pompeo Marchesi.

Volta stands with a book in his left hand and his right resting on the voltaic pile he had invented. The massive pedestal is by Francesco Durelli, a professor at the Brera Academy: the front bears a plain dedication, “A Volta – La Patria”, to Volta, from his homeland, and his scientific instruments are carved in low relief on the sides and back. The statue stands in the middle of Piazza Volta, inside the walled town, a few steps from the lake.

  • A first stop among Volta's places in Como, before the Tempio Voltiano and the tomb at Camnago.
