Morazzone a Como
Morazzone in Como's cathedral, four hundred years after his death.
Como
The small neoclassical temple on the hill of Camnago Volta, raised by Alessandro Volta's widow and sons, with the relief of the battery presented to Napoleon.
Volta's widow and sons commissioned the mausoleum, designed by Melchiorre Nosetti, and it was unveiled on 5 March 1831.
Beside the entrance gate stand two statues by Luigi Argenti: on the left Religion praying for her exemplary son, on the right Science weeping for her devotee. Inside, on the back wall, is the marble sarcophagus by the sculptor Bayer. Above it, a bust of Volta by Giovan Battista Comolli stands between two winged figures, one of them crowning him; higher up, a relief shows Volta presenting the battery to Napoleon in Paris in 1801. It has been a national monument since 1925.
