Why go

Nostra Signora del Prodigio is a ship-shaped sanctuary on Garzola hill, on the road from Como to Brunate.

Fulvio Cappelletti's building was constructed between 1963 and 1968, reviving an early twentieth-century plan for a Marian sanctuary. Beneath the church, the Sacrario degli Sport Nautici holds mementoes of sportspeople and sailors, marine biology specimens and biblical scenes made with shells. Since 2008 a gilded bronze statue of the Immaculate Virgin has stood on the roof, facing Como.

  • The gilded statue of the Immaculate Conception on the roof, about two and a half metres tall, is by the sculptor Feletti and was cast in 1959.
  • Behind the altar, a large stained-glass window tells the legend of how the icon of the Virgin was found.
  • In the shrine, a display case remembers Filippo Mondelli, a world rowing champion who grew up on Lake Como.
