Why go

The funicular links Como's waterfront, from the station in Piazza De Gasperi, to the village of Brunate.

The line is just over a kilometre long and climbs almost 500 metres, with gradients of up to 55 per cent; the journey takes seven minutes, with a request stop at Carescione. Work began on 4 January 1893 and the funicular opened on 11 November 1894. It was first worked by steam; it went electric in 1911, and in 1934–35 the line was renewed and the Brunate station rebuilt. Today's two cars, 13.40 metres long, carry 80 people each. It is public transport: since 1981 it has belonged to the Lombardy Region, and the service is run by ATM.
