The event recurs every year in this period, but the dates are not confirmed. Check with the organiser.

The Giubiera takes place in Varenna on the last Thursday in January, to drive out the winter and greet the coming spring.

It is said to go back to Roman rites of late January, to the cult of Jupiter (hence the Thursday) and the festivals of the seed. Over time it became a noisy feast: in the old days the soot-black chains from the fireplaces were dragged through the lanes until they came out clean. Every year the Associazione Culturale L. Scanagatta organises it, with the traditional round of the lanes and, at the end, cakes and mulled wine.

The programme for the 2026 edition

On Thursday 29 January 2026 everyone meets at 20:30 in Piazza San Giorgio. The traditional round follows and, at the end, cakes and mulled wine at the association's rooms in Contrada dell'Arco. Anyone may join.
