How it works

The ferries linking the three villages of the central lake run frequently for most of the day.

With the central-lake unlimited-travel ticket (libera circolazione) you get on and off as you please between Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia; the last sailing of the day is the one to note before setting out.

  1. Base yourself in Varenna if you arrive by train, Menaggio if you also want the bus to Lugano, Bellagio if you want to sleep on the point between the two branches.
  2. Suggested order: the opposite shore in the morning, lunch wherever there is shade, the villas in the afternoon, back at sunset.
  3. Car ferries and passenger boats use different piers in some places: check which quay before joining a queue.
