Why go

The park covers almost the whole Bellagio headland, some 21 hectares, and climbs to the summit, where a medieval castle once stood.

The villa was first laid out in the fifteenth century by Marchesino Stanga, the local feudal lord; in 1788 it passed to Count Alessandro Serbelloni, who devoted himself above all to creating the great park. Around 1900 the villa was a hotel; it was then bought by the American Ella Walker, Princess della Torre e Tasso, and in 1959 it passed to the Rockefeller Foundation, which holds conferences and study residencies here. The villa cannot be visited, but the park can be walked on a guided tour: paths, terraces and woodland with views alternating between the two branches of the lake.

  • The walk climbs to the top of the headland that divides the lake, with views over both branches.
  • The route passes the remains of the medieval castle and the eighteenth-century artificial grottoes.

Highlights

  • The two-branch view from the highest point
  • The remains of the fortress
  • The formal gardens around the villa

Getting there

  • Meeting point in the centre of Bellagio; the ascent is on foot and fairly steep.

Accessibility

  • Of the roughly two-hour guided visit, the first hour is uphill.
