Why go

The Asilo Sant'Elia is a Rationalist school building by Giuseppe Terragni, named after Antonio Sant'Elia, in Como's San Rocco district.

It was built between 1935 and 1937 and inaugurated on 31 October 1937. Low wings form a U around a courtyard surrounded by the garden. Large windows connect the interiors with the green space. The design placed the entrance hall, cloakrooms and toilets in the main block, classrooms and play areas in the right wing, and a gymnasium in the left. It has a reinforced-concrete frame with masonry infill. The exterior can be viewed from Via Alciato.

  • Another of Terragni's works in town, like the Novocomum and the Casa del Fascio.
  • From the street you see the windows and the garden.

Getting there

  • At Via Andrea Alciato 13, in the San Rocco district, south of the old town.
