Why go

The Val Sanagra takes its name from the stream that runs down from the Tabor, the Marnotto and the Bregagno to Menaggio; since 2005 it has been a local park, created by the municipalities of Grandola ed Uniti and Menaggio. The ethnographic and natural-history museum is in Villa Camozzi, an eighteenth-century house that is also Grandola's town hall. It has rooms on the fauna, the fossils, the mushrooms, music and farming life, and one devoted to the little Menaggio–Porlezza railway, in service from 1884 to 1939. A few minutes away, the Fornace Galli fired bricks for the valley from the seventeenth century until shortly after the Second World War. In a clearing at Velzo, at 450 metres, stands the Rogolone: a sessile oak eight metres round and twenty-five high, which began growing around 1730 and has been a national monument since 1928.

  • A valley museum that covers both the nature and the work of the people who lived there.
  • The Rogolone, an oak eight metres round that began growing around 1730, a walk from the museum.

Highlights

  • The Menaggio–Porlezza railway room
  • The Rogolone, a monumental oak
  • The Fornace Galli brickworks

Getting there

  • At Grandola ed Uniti, above Menaggio on the road to Porlezza: the museum is in Villa Camozzi, on Piazza Camozzi.
  • The Fornace Galli is at Mulino della Valle, a few minutes from the museum; the Rogolone in a clearing at Velzo.
  • Without a car, the C112 bus Menaggio–Porlezza–Lugano stops in front of the museum, at Codogna, on Piazza Luigi Camozzi.

Accessibility

  • Thanks to the lift, the museum can be visited in a wheelchair, except the Diorama Room and the Ethnographic Room, which can be seen on video.
  • At the Fornace Galli the outside and the ground floor of the main building are accessible; the engine room, the first floor, where the toilets are, and the kiln workers' house are not.
