Christmas in Menaggio
From late November to Epiphany, the ice rink on Piazza Garibaldi, markets on the lakefront, the Loveno nativity scenes and concerts in Santo Stefano.
Menaggio
The Mylius family's villa at Loveno, above Menaggio, now the German-Italian Centre for European Dialogue, open for guided visits.
In 1829 Heinrich Mylius, a merchant born in Frankfurt who had made his fortune in Milan, bought an estate at Loveno, above Menaggio, as a wedding present for his son Julius and Luigia Vitali.
After Julius died, the villa became a place of remembrance for him: the paintings and sculptures Mylius commissioned for it take loss, fate and trust in the future as their themes. The last descendant, Ignazio Vigoni Medici di Marignano, left it in his will to the Federal Republic of Germany: today it is Villa Vigoni, the German-Italian Centre for European Dialogue, which since 1986 has brought together scholars of the two countries here. Around the villa lies a large park, with a little temple among the cypresses.
