Why go

The church of San Martino stands on a natural terrace of the Sasso San Martino, at 475 metres, above Griante: from the churchyard you see the village from above, the Bellagio promontory and the three branches of the lake. A chapel, San Martino al Monte, was already there at the end of the sixteenth century; around the middle of the seventeenth it took the title of the Blessed Virgin of Graces. Tradition tells of a shepherd girl who found a wooden statue of the Virgin, probably of the late fifteenth century, in a cave, the Buco della Madonna: carried down to the village, it was found again on the mountain, and the sanctuary rose there.

  • One of the places that show all three branches of the lake, twenty to thirty minutes up a path from Griante.
  • The church on its rock can be seen from below too, from the boat towards Cadenabbia.

  • From the Cadenabbia pier a good quarter of an hour up to Griante, then the path: about 270 metres of ascent in all.
