Why go

The Anglican Church of the Ascension is a Gothic Revival building on the Cadenabbia lakefront, opposite the pier.

Designed by Giuseppe Brentano for the English community, it was consecrated in 1891. Brentano died in 1889, before work began, and is buried in his family's chapel in Griante cemetery. The church has a single nave with wide transverse arches, a rose window on the façade and pinnacles above the piers. Inside are stained glass, gold mosaics and a two-manual organ built in 1939 by Balbiani Vegezzi Bossi of Milan. It belongs to the Church of England's Diocese in Europe and hosts services in English and concerts.

  • A nineteenth-century English church on the lakefront, beside the ferry pier.
  • The stained glass, gold mosaics and Balbiani Vegezzi Bossi organ of 1939.
