How it works

The great Lario villas were built mostly between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Villa Carlotta, Balbianello, Melzi, Monastero and Cipressi all sit in the centre of the lake and can be visited unhurriedly in two days.

  1. Two villas a day is the sensible maximum: each takes between an hour and a half and three hours, and the ferry transfers add up.
  2. Pair them by shore, not by taste: Monastero and Cipressi are next door to each other; Carlotta and Balbianello are ten bus minutes apart on the same side.
  3. April and May for the flowering.
  4. Check closing days: almost all close one day a week, and several close for the winter.
