Why go

Villa Margherita is a private residence in Cadenabbia, built in 1853 for the publisher Ricordi.

From the lake and the Regina road it can be recognised by the name Margherita on the pediment, the clock and two sculptures on the cornice, possibly allegories of Music and Poetry. The square three-storey main block is flanked by two lower wings. A semicircular hall, once used for small concerts, overlooks the garden, with the main-floor terrace above it. The garden slopes towards the lake and contains azaleas, rhododendrons and roses. Local tradition links the villa to the composition of some arias from Verdi's La Traviata; guests also included Amilcare Ponchielli and Anton Rubinstein.

  • The square three-storey main block is flanked by two lower wings, open at ground level.
  • The terrace of the main floor opens above the semicircular hall.
  • A marble balustrade crowns the building and hides its hipped roof.
