Why go

The sanctuary of the Madonna della Pace stands in the hamlet of Nobiallo, north of Menaggio, among the woods above the lake road.

Above the baroque altar it keeps the Miracle relief by the sculptor Matteo Destopanis, from 1484. Many ex votos hang on the walls, among them two seventeenth-century canvases by G.B. Macolino of Chiavenna and a painting by C.G. Castelli of the sanctuary's consecration in 1660. Nobiallo is an old fishing village whose streets and stairways run down to the lake. In the village, beside the church of Santi Bartolomeo e Nicola, which has seventeenth-century canvases and a vault frescoed by L. Tagliaferri in 1898, stands the twelfth-century leaning bell tower. It is square in plan, with a four-sided roof, a strong tilt and an old sundial on the south face.

Getting there

  • At Nobiallo, north of Menaggio along the Regina road; the leaning bell tower is at Via Regina 1, beside the church of Santi Bartolomeo e Nicola.

Accessibility

  • From the lakefront the way climbs about six hundred metres on asphalt and cobbles, with a few steps, then sixteen cobbled steps and a flight of forty-five with handrails up to the little square. One step leads into the church, which is free of obstacles inside.
