Why go

Sant'Agostino is a Gothic church at the foot of the hill of Brunate, above Como's old port of the same name.

Augustinian hermit friars from San Tommaso at Civiglio founded it; it was consecrated in 1384. Stone piers and pointed arches separate the nave and two aisles beneath timber trusses. The façade has a rose window and a fifteenth-century doorway carved with flowers. Six Renaissance and Baroque chapels open off the left aisle, with stucco, frescoes and wooden altars. The chancel preserves an Annunciation with prophets on the arch and a Crucifixion in the choir. Parts of the monastery's two cloisters survive beside the church.

  • The baroque chapels, a few steps from the harbour.
  • The entrance steps and rose window, on the route between the harbour and the funicular.
