Why go

The Muro di Sormano, the Sormano Wall, is a narrow lane, closed to motor traffic, that climbs from Sormano to the Colma in four hairpins: about 1,700 metres long with nearly three hundred metres of ascent, an average gradient of 17% and ramps beyond 25%. The Giro di Lombardia raced up it from 1960 to 1962 and then dropped it: the riders protested, and spectators pushing them up skewed the race. The road was resurfaced in 2006, and since 2012 the climb has returned in some editions. Painted on the tarmac, metre by metre, are the altitudes: the closer together they are, the steeper the road. Alongside are sayings of cycling's greats and the times of the riders of those years.

  • About 1,700 metres at 17% on average, with ramps beyond 25%.
  • Closed to cars, it can be walked too, past the heights and sayings written on the tarmac.
