How it works

From Bellagio the road climbs to the Ghisallo pass with gradients touching 14 per cent: one of cycling's historic ascents, used by the Giro di Lombardia.

At the top stands the sanctuary of the Madonna del Ghisallo, patron of cyclists since 1949, with champions' bicycles hanging on the walls, and beside it the Museum of Cycling.

  1. By bike, from the junction as you leave Bellagio: about 4 km of climbing, 3 almost flat with short descents and a last kilometre and a half to the sanctuary. In all a little under 500 metres of ascent, 5.5 per cent on average and stretches of 14.
  2. Without a bike: bus from Bellagio towards Civenna and Magreglio, or twenty minutes by car.
  3. The museum and the sanctuary are two separate, adjacent visits.
  4. From Magreglio you can continue towards Monte San Primo for the view down both branches.
  5. For the Muro di Sormano, drop from the Ghisallo towards Asso and climb back up to Sormano: the Muro, closed to cars, starts above the village.
