Why go
San Giorgio stands above Mandello, at the top of a short climb and looking over the lake, on the old road of the eastern shore now called the Sentiero del Viandante.
It is a gabled church built between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries, with stone walls, a pointed doorway and open wooden trusses. Inside, fifteenth-century votive frescoes cover most of the walls, the triumphal arch and the back of the presbytery. Painted in the circle of the Franciscan Observance of San Bernardino, they tell of the Last Judgement, when each will be judged by the works they did and above all by their charity.
