Why go

San Giorgio is Dorio's former parish church, in a meadow at Mandonico near the Sentiero del Viandante.

Documented from 1412, it served as the parish church from 1506 to 1677. Alterations make its medieval fabric hard to date; the exterior is mainly seventeenth-century. Six fresco panels painted in 1492 and restored in 1983 survive on the left wall. They show Saint George spearing the dragon, two Virgins with the Child, Saint Michael weighing souls, Saint Anthony Abbot and a bishop, perhaps Saint Gotthard.

  • The date 1492 can just be made out in an inscription painted on the fresco itself.
  • On the front, beside the doorway, are windows opened at different periods.
  • In the Middle Ages Mandonico was the main settlement of Dorio; its people later moved down the hill to Solmogno.
