Why go

The church of San Rocco stands on a natural balcony 484 metres up, along the Sentiero del Viandante, the old road to the Dorio mountains.

It was built in 1848 in the simple forms of minor Baroque building. In 1856, as the plaque at the entrance records, the people of Dorio made a vow here after being spared by the cholera epidemic; around it lay the cemetery, where the infected were probably buried. Every year on 16 August the villagers climb to the little church to renew the promise. Inside are two altarpieces with Saints Roch and Anthony of Padua, frescoed in 1860 by Giovanni Maria Tagliaferri of Pagnona. Further down, in the old hamlet of Mandonico, is the former parish church of San Giorgio.

  • A votive chapel on a natural balcony above the lake, along the Sentiero del Viandante.
  • The promise the people of Dorio renew every 16 August.
