Why go

The Orezia Tower is a square keep on a crag above Dervio, at the mouth of the Valvarrone.

The fortified complex guarded the route to the Valsassina and relayed signals across the lake.

The tower dates from the fifteenth century, but a fortification here is recorded as early as 1039, during a siege by the Tre Pievi. The surrounding houses formed its defensive walls; their ruins survive beside the tower. The sides have loopholes and an opening a third of the way up the western face. A statue of the Madonna has stood on top since 8 December 1954. Owned by the Comune since 1939, the tower opened to the public in 2016 after restoration.

  • From the top you see the lake from Dervio to the opposite shore.
  • The climb up the cobbled mule track between houses with arches and porticoes.

Highlights

  • The staircase inside the tower
  • The Madonna on the top
  • The view over the lake

Getting there
