Why go

Castelvedro is a ruined fortification on the Mai headland above southern Dervio, about four hundred metres above sea level.

It controlled the road up the left side of the Valvarrone towards the Valsassina. Its name, meaning “old castle”, already appears in the Statute of Dervio and Corenno of 1384. When the road moved to the opposite side of the valley, the castle lost importance to Orezia. Surviving stone walls reach four metres in height; rounded masonry to the south is interpreted as a tower base.

  • The surviving stone walls on the Mai headland.
  • Views over Dervio and the lake.

Highlights

  • The stone walls up to four metres high
  • The rounded base of the watchtower

Getting there

  • From the church of Santi Quirico e Giulitta, near the station, climb the Via ai Monti mule track through woods and chestnut groves; in about twenty minutes you reach Pianezzo (380 m), right after it take the path to the right signed “Mai/Castelvedro” and in 10–15 minutes you are at Mai (402 m). Return the same way.

Accessibility

  • From Dervio you climb a steep but easy mule track through woods and chestnut groves, then a footpath: 182 metres of ascent.
