Why go

The collegiate church of Santo Stefano, Lenno's parish church, was rebuilt in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when the facade was made and the side porticoes became aisles.

Halfway along the nave, though, two hatches lead down to a crypt of the late eleventh century: five bays of cross vaults on slender columns and three small apses, on a plan taken from the church of Sant'Eufemia on Isola Comacina. In the first chapel on the right are two frescoes of Luini's school, the Nativity and the Adoration of the Magi. Beside the church stands the octagonal baptistery of San Giovanni, from the last quarter of the eleventh century, similar to the one at Oggiono.

  • Two Romanesque buildings on the same square, six minutes on foot from the boat.
  • Beneath the church, a crypt reached through two hatches in the floor.
